Social Action

Current projects include:

  • Every-other-month collection of items needed by Abby’s House, a local shelter for abused and homeless women and children.
  • The making and sale of canvas bags with our UU logo and donated handmade tie-dye items to help support our congregation.
  • We have formally initiated the green efforts at our UU with green coffee hours, laminated general order of service cards in the pews and greatly decreased paper use.
  • We started a “green” article each month in our congregational newsletter, Vista.
  • We have begun looking into the official process for “Green Sanctuary” requirements.
  • We present a War Poster update on the current statistics for the number of U.S. soldiers killed and wounded, as well as the number of Iraqi and Afghani civilians who were killed. This includes the reading of the names, ages, rank and hometown of the soldiers killed in the week prior. This year, we decided to present the statistics three times during the church year, in September, February and June.
  • We update the sign outside the church which states the number of U.S. soldiers who were killed.

Past projects included:

  • The Field of Flags, a traveling New England flag display that honors the sacrifice and human cost of the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
  • The FIRST Interfaith Social Action Committee effort in Westborough, Tents of Hope, an international effort for the refugees of Darfur.
  • Project Classroom, an interfaith effort to provide for a school in need after Hurricane Katrina.
  • AnĀ ethical eating program.
