Religious Education classes are held on Sunday mornings during the worship service, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. On the first and third Sundays, children start in the sanctuary for intergenerational worship for approximately 20 minutes, then head to class. On the second and fourth Sundays, children start in the chapel for a Children’s Worship Circle for approximately 20 minutes, then head to class.
About Our Religious Education Program
In an atmosphere of acceptance, tolerance and respect for individual beliefs, the children and youth in our church school programs — designed by Religious Education Director Janet Davis (pictured at left) — are challenged to develop their own answers to the big questions of life through worship, celebration, learning activities, service projects and observance of traditional holidays and rituals.
Using a variety of curricula, the children and youth learn about:
- Our Unitarian Universalist heritage and principles
- Jewish and Christian scriptures and traditions
- The beliefs and customs of many of the world’s religions
- The goal of ethical living
Mission Statement of the Religious Education Program, adopted July 2009
Our religious education program at UUCSW brings together adults, children, and youth to actively build a supportive community that embraces diversity, inspires confidence, encourages growth and develops values that we take with us on our life journey.
Class Groupings and Curricula for 2011-2012
Our Sunday School is a cooperative program with parents and members leading all the classes. The program runs from the second Sunday in September through the second Sunday in June. The year is divided into two blocks: Block 1 beginning on September 11, 2011 and running through Jan. 22, 2012 and Block 2 beginning on Jan. 29, 2012 and running through June 10, 2012. The complete listing of class groupings and curricula can be found Here.
Coming of Age
The Coming of Age Program at UUCSW is a program designed for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The program components include Sunday school classes using curricula; experiential outings; individual meeting time with the minister; a culminating ceremony each spring for the graduating eighth graders.
To learn more about what our Coming of Age program entails, read our Coming of Age pamphlet here.
Youth Group
Our Youth Group is for high school teens and meets twice per month on Sundays at noon. (Please see the Vista for the updated schedule.) The Youth Group works with adult advisors to plan social action projects such as volunteering at a soup kitchen and service trips.
PLEASE NOTE: We are a Nut-Free Program
We have children in our Religious Education Program with peanut and tree allergies. In addition, we share space with Miss Tanya’s Nursery School, which is also a Nut-Free Program. Therefore, we cannot leave any nut products in the classrooms.
