Committees

We are always looking for new committee members. It’s not too late to join one of our many groups that helps the Unitarian Universalist Congregational Society of Westborough (UUCSW) a vibrant community. Joining a committee is a great way to share your talents with the church and the greater community and make some wonderful friendships along the way.

Listed below are the committee descriptions and names of the folks to contact. You can e-mail our church administrator — uuwestboro@yahoo.com – if you’re interested in contacting a committee chair.

Religious Education Committee (meets first Sunday of month after church)
Chaired by David King
Functions:

  • Organize holiday pageant.
  • Work with director of Religious Education.
  • Review curriculum.
  • Talk about issues of concern to Religious Education families and students.
  • Discuss Religious Education plans and goals.

Membership Committee (meets once a month, usually on a Thursday evening)
Functions*:

  • Recruit volunteers for Sunday greeters.
  • Place phone calls to remind congregants about events.
  • Plan/facilitate newcomers’ meetings.
  • Plan special events (church picnic, potlucks, etc.).
  • Plan events for Membership Month in January.
  • Provide informational packets to visitors.
  • Maintain a membership database and help create a directory when possible.

(* Members are not required to participate in every activity but may participate to the extent they are comfortable.)

Hospitality Committee
Chaired by Robin Fleming
Functions:

  • Recruit volunteers to provide, set up and clean up for Sunday Coffee Hours after Sunday services.
  • Organize and order supplies as needed, including Fair Trade Coffee for the use of the congregation.
  • Provide training and logistic support to the volunteers, helping where needed.

Finance Committee (meets evenings usually on a Tuesday or a time convenient to all)
Chaired by Jim Slack
Functions:

  • Review current finances and any special issues or needs related to finance.
  • Plan budget for the coming year.

Canvass Committee (meets during & immediately preceding the annual canvass campaign, activities occur within a brief time span of weekend to a week or two)
Chaired by Jim Slack
Functions:

  • Plan the canvass campaign (kick-off, theme, parties and paperwork involved).
  • The Chair reports figures to the Board of Trustees.

Building & Grounds (meets once at the beginning of year followed by “work parties” 3-4 times per year)
Chaired by Tanya Trainor
Functions*:

  • Prioritize jobs, hire contractors if necessary.
  • Schedule work parties as needed.
  • Addressing building maintenance concerns.

(*This committee is task-oriented and you can help just once or twice and work within your comfort level.)

Program Committee (meets once a month)
Chaired by Kathy Metzger
Functions:

  • Plan events sponsored by the committee.
  • Plan and provide for Program Sundays.
  • Plan and provide for summer services.
  • Find interesting people to lead services lay-led or guest speakers from out of church.
  • Plan panel discussion services (God panel, etc.).
  • Organizational work that goes with planning a service, including paperwork and publicity.

Social Action (meets once a month or less)
Chaired by Amy Martelock and Heidi Mitchell
Functions:

  • Plan for and provide opportunities for our church to become involved in community service/social action.
  • Previous events have included collection for orphanage in Haiti, Giving Tree (Christmas presents for the poor), Valentine bags to Food Pantry, Oxfam dinner.

Ways and Means (meets once a month or less)
Chaired by Tanya Trainor
Functions*:

  • Raise money for our church expenses.
  • Plan and implement fundraisers, brainstorm.
  • Past events include: Annual Auction, Yard Sale, Raffles, Holiday Fair.
  • Phone calls related to Ways and Means.
  • Decorate, plan food, sell tickets for events.

(*Members don’t have to work on every event.)

Helping Hands (Communicates by phone)
Co-Chaired by Jen Tolman and Tina Lego-Steinberg
Functions*:

  • Help members/friends in times of need.
  • Provide cooking (most often), transportation and child care.
  • Visits members.
  • Makes phone calls.

(*Low commitment can do only once or twice.)

Housekeeping (No meetings to attend.)
Functions: Takes care of keeping the building in readiness for worship and meetings.

Music (meets as needed)
Chaired by Nancy Avila
Oversees music for the UUCSW.

Technology Committee (meets infrequently)
Chaired by Jim Kirk
Functions:

Support all technology needs of the church, including (but not limited to) computers, networking, telephone and copiers. We are always on call, at uucswtechcom@yahoogroups.com.
